Unvaccinated residents in Pennsylvania face rising risks as measles cases reach 693 and fatalities increase

PENNSYLVANIA / RankWire.AI / – Pennsylvania health authorities have confirmed that a 40-year-old woman from Jefferson County, who was not vaccinated, passed away while infected with measles. Her death occurred on September 12, during the state’s largest measles outbreak in more than 30 years. Laboratory tests identified the virus in a sample taken from her. After reviewing medical information, officials classified her death as measles-related. This event marked Pennsylvania’s third measles-associated death of 2026 and heightened concerns over the increasing number of cases across the state.

Pennsylvania measles cases hit 693 as death toll reaches four
Measles cases and hospitalizations continue across Pennsylvania during the 2026 outbreak.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office initially reported that complications linked to a suspected measles infection contributed to her death. Later, lab confirmation verified an active measles infection. The woman had not received a measles vaccination. Authorities have not disclosed her identity to protect the family’s privacy. Her case emerged amid an outbreak affecting both children and adults. Measles can cause severe health issues, especially among those with no immunity or at higher risk of complications.

As of September 14, Pennsylvania documented 693 confirmed measles cases in 38 counties. The Pennsylvania Department of Health also reported 133 hospitalizations tied to the outbreak. Only four cases involved individuals who are properly vaccinated for their age. Data indicate most patients lack full protection from the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine. The outbreak has expanded across multiple communities since cases began rising in spring, making it one of the most significant measles events in the state in decades.

Pennsylvania’s death toll rises to four

Health officials confirmed a fourth measles-related death on September 15, involving an 18-year-old from Mifflin County who had not been vaccinated. The county coroner determined that acute disseminated encephalomyelitis caused the teenager’s death. This rare neurological complication can occur after a measles infection. Pennsylvania had already reported two measles-related deaths in Lancaster County on August 25. Those earlier fatalities involved infants too young for routine vaccinations. They marked Pennsylvania’s first measles-related deaths in 35 years.

Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or breathes. The virus can stay infectious in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours. Early symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and red or watery eyes. A rash often appears days later, starting on the head and spreading downward. Symptoms can develop between seven and 21 days after exposure. Health officials recommend that anyone with possible measles symptoms contact a healthcare provider before seeking treatment.

Measles cases in the US continue to rise

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 3,294 confirmed measles cases nationwide as of September 10, 2026. By that date, 47 jurisdictions had reported cases. Federal data show that MMR vaccination coverage among kindergarteners has dropped. Coverage fell to 92.4% during the 2025-2026 school year, down from 95.2% in 2019-2020. Public health officials stress that maintaining vaccination rates above 95% is critical for preventing ongoing measles transmission within communities.

Two doses of the MMR vaccine provide about 97% protection against measles, according to health guidance. The disease can lead to pneumonia, brain swelling, and other serious health issues. Pennsylvania officials note that nearly one in five patients in the current outbreak has required hospitalization. Those exposed should monitor for symptoms during the recommended period. Anyone showing symptoms should call a healthcare provider before visiting a clinic or hospital to help prevent further spread.
