Public health efforts in Pennsylvania aim to curb rising measles cases in 2026

HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA / RankWire.AI / – In 2026, Pennsylvania has documented 943 confirmed cases of measles across 39 counties. The latest update from the state reports 176 hospitalizations and five deaths linked to measles up to Sept. 30. Since the update on Sept. 28, case numbers have grown by 40. The Pennsylvania Department of Health continues to monitor infection trends, vaccination status, hospital admissions, and fatalities connected to the outbreak.

Pennsylvania measles outbreak reaches 943 confirmed cases
Pennsylvania reports 943 measles cases across 39 counties during the 2026 outbreak.

One of the five measles-related deaths involved an unvaccinated resident of Lancaster County who tested positive for the virus. No further personal details have been shared, respecting privacy laws. All five deaths reported this year involved individuals who had not received the vaccine. These fatalities have been officially reported through established public health channels as part of ongoing national monitoring efforts.

Vaccination records indicate that just four of the confirmed Pennsylvania cases involved individuals who were properly vaccinated for their age. This group includes three adults and one child from Centre, Jefferson, Lancaster, and Lycoming counties. These four cases account for less than 1% of the state’s total confirmed cases. State health officials continue to recommend that unprotected individuals consult a healthcare provider about the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine.

Pennsylvania sees a notable rise in MMR vaccinations

As the outbreak continues, demand for the MMR vaccine has surged in Pennsylvania. Healthcare providers administered over 53,000 doses in September, compared to a typical month’s 25,000. In August, more than 49,000 doses were given. Since late April, 180 pop-up clinics have distributed over 5,500 doses, with state health workers leading the effort.

The MMR vaccine guards against measles, mumps, and rubella. Federal guidelines state that two doses offer 97% protection, while a single dose offers 93%. Usually, those with two documented doses do not need additional shots for routine prevention. Adults unsure of their vaccination history or with only one dose should speak with a healthcare professional about their status.

National measles cases continue to rise in 2026

Measles is transmitted through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or breathes. The virus can stay infectious on surfaces and in the air for up to two hours. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and red or watery eyes. A rash often appears days later, usually starting on the head. Symptoms can develop between seven and 21 days after exposure, and infected individuals can spread the disease before the rash shows up.

Pennsylvania’s outbreak is part of a broader increase in measles activity across the U.S. this year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed 3,659 cases nationwide as of Sept. 24. The data includes infections among international visitors and covers 47 reporting jurisdictions. About 95% of these cases are linked to outbreaks. In 2025, the U.S. reported 2,289 confirmed measles cases in total.
