Pacific Islands to Benefit from Over $150 Million U.S. Support Package

KOROR, PALAU / RankWire.AI / – During a regional gathering in Palau, the United States announced a support package exceeding $150 million for Pacific Island nations. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau presented the aid on September 1 at the Pacific Islands Forum Partners Dialogue. The assistance covers sectors such as energy security, transportation, digital infrastructure, maritime enforcement, and public services. The State Department indicated that this package consolidates multiple programs across the Pacific Islands region.

US launches Pacific support package exceeding $150 million
Pacific Island energy, digital and maritime projects form part of new US support.

One of the largest components is a $60 million Regional Energy Security Initiative. The State Department stated it plans to allocate this funding in cooperation with Congress. This initiative aims to back fuel storage projects and measures to enhance the stability of electricity grids. Additionally, U.S. officials outlined further infrastructure investments to improve access to vital services. However, some components are still awaiting congressional approval before funds can be disbursed.

Tonga is set to receive U.S. support for a fuel transport and storage system study. The U.S. Trade and Development Agency approved a grant of $1.42 million for this feasibility analysis. The study will look at port facilities, pipelines, storage capacity, and Tonga’s fuel pricing system. The plan includes increasing the country’s fuel reserves from about 15-20 days of supply to roughly 60 days. This project is part of the broader regional energy initiative.

Focus on energy infrastructure and storage solutions

The package also allocates $50 million for a port upgrade on Penrhyn in the Cook Islands. New Zealand has committed NZ$17.5 million to co-lead the project alongside the Cook Islands and the United States. The upgrade aims to improve port safety, cargo handling, and transport access on the remote atoll. It will also enhance connections to local services. The funding was announced during the same regional discussions in Palau.

The aid program extends to digital and transportation projects in Tonga, Palau, and the Marshall Islands. The U.S. Trade and Development Agency will fund a study to modernize Tonga’s national data center and network. The Marshall Islands will receive technical support for its mobile network, key ports, and Amata Kabua International Airport. Palau will get assistance for a feasibility study related to relocating Belau National Hospital. These efforts add communication, aviation, and public infrastructure elements to the overall support package.

Expanding maritime security and technological initiatives

The United States plans to dedicate $17 million toward programs combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. These efforts are pending congressional approval. The initiatives include legal reforms, compliance training, and monitoring technology. Washington and Palau will co-chair a new conference of Pacific police ministers. The meeting will address maritime security, drug trafficking, cybercrime, and illicit finance. U.S. officials included law enforcement measures among the broader commitments made to Pacific Island nations.

Additional projects involve cloud technology, seabed mapping, and drinking water services. U.S. programs aim to expand cloud support for Pacific governments and assist in marine mapping and characterization. Environmental officials also plan a drinking water sampling project in Palau, which includes training for local operators and laboratory staff. Overall, the package exceeds $150 million in planned funding, grants, and technical assistance. Some projects have already received agency approval, while others are awaiting congressional clearance.
