Map Highlights US Influence in North America, Drawing Criticism from Mexico and Greenland

WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – President Donald Trump shared a map on Truth Social that depicted the U.S. flag spanning much of North America. The image displayed Canada, Mexico, and Greenland beneath a design labeled “United States of America.” It also extended over Iceland and parts of the Caribbean and Central America. Trump did not add any written explanation with the image. The map kept geographic labels for the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of America.

Trump map shows US flag across Canada, Mexico and Greenland
The Truth Social map placed Canada, Mexico and Greenland beneath US flag imagery.

The map was posted at 10:43 a.m. EDT on September 7 via his official Truth Social account. The post did not reference any border changes, treaties, or government orders. Canada and Mexico remain independent nations with recognized borders. Greenland is still a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Iceland remains a sovereign country. The image did not mention any legal process that could change the status of the countries or territories under the U.S. flag.

This map was part of a series of geography-related posts from the president during that period. Earlier posts included images replacing New Mexico’s name with “New America.” Trump also promoted “Lake America” as a new name for Lake Ontario. His administration previously instructed federal agencies to use “Gulf of America” for the Gulf of Mexico. The president has also called for U.S. ownership of Greenland. Danish and Greenlandic authorities rejected proposals to transfer control of the Arctic territory.

    Mexico Responds with Sovereignty Assertion

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded by reaffirming Mexico’s independence and sovereignty. She stated that the country would not become a colony or protectorate of another nation. Her comments came during September, a month when Mexico celebrates its independence through annual events. The map placed Mexico under the same U.S. flag pattern covering Canada and other regions. The post did not include any legal document or bilateral agreement regarding the U.S.-Mexico border. Existing border arrangements stayed in place after the image was shared.

In the image, Canada also appeared fully covered by the U.S. flag. The president has previously suggested the idea of Canada joining the United States. On September 7, he threatened restrictions on Canadian aircraft maker Bombardier unless it moved production to the U.S. Canada responded with retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion of U.S. goods after trade negotiations stalled. These trade measures were separate from the map post and did not change Canada’s territorial or political status.

    Greenland Remains Under Danish Control

Greenland was prominently shown beneath the U.S. flag. The president has repeatedly stated that the United States should acquire Greenland, citing national security concerns. Denmark and Greenland have rejected U.S. ownership. The European Union announced a 200 million euro partnership plan for Greenland covering 2026 and 2027. The initiative includes support for digital connectivity, energy, education, and sustainable mining. Denmark also sent military personnel to Greenland in early September for Arctic training exercises.

The Truth Social post did not include a caption explaining the map’s purpose or legal implications. It did not announce any government policy, territorial transfer, or change to existing borders. Mexico remains a sovereign nation, Canada stays an independent state, Greenland continues as a self-governing territory within Denmark. Iceland also retains its status as an independent country. The image stands as a presidential social media post without any formal legal change to the territories depicted.
