MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will limit the options for the Gemini model available to free personal accounts starting October 9, 2026. Users without a Google AI subscription will only have access to Flash-Lite via Gemini Apps. They will no longer get access to Flash or Pro under the new policy. Google explained these updates in revised support details for its consumer AI service. The changes apply to personal Google accounts, not those managed by workplaces or schools.

Google AI Plus users will still be able to use Flash-Lite and Flash after the policy takes effect. But their subscription will no longer include Pro access. Google has not announced a single date for transitioning all AI Plus users. Instead, affected customers will receive an email informing them when their access changes. Subscribers to AI Pro and AI Ultra will still have access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.
Flash-Lite is built as a fast, efficient Gemini model for quick responses and daily tasks. Flash offers extra features while maintaining speed across many types of requests. Pro is designed for more complex jobs, like advanced mathematics, coding, and in-depth analysis. Google states the model can handle text, files, images, and videos, applying deeper reasoning. Responses from Pro may take longer than those from other Gemini models due to increased processing needs.
Paid Gemini subscriptions ensure broader model access
Google is adding low, medium, and high effort settings for models in a user’s plan. Higher effort allows a model to use more resources for detailed responses. It also uses more of the account’s usage allowance. AI Pro and AI Ultra users will access Deep Think for challenging reasoning tasks. Google describes Deep Think as a feature that applies maximum parallel reasoning to complex requests.
These new limits follow earlier adjustments to how Gemini Apps calculate usage. On May 17, 2026, Google introduced compute-based limits. Allowances refresh every five hours until the weekly limit is reached. The system considers prompt complexity, features used, and conversation length. Premium features and advanced models can consume allowances faster than basic ones. On July 24, Google also extended these limits to users under 18.
Different usage caps for Google AI subscription plans
Users without a Google AI subscription receive the standard usage allowances. AI Plus offers twice the normal limit, while AI Pro boosts it fourfold. AI Ultra provides five or twenty times the AI Pro allowance, depending on the plan. Tools like Deep Research, media generation, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think can use larger parts of these limits. Paid plans thus offer higher usage caps alongside wider model options.
The October updates apply only to Gemini Apps accessed through personal Google accounts. They do not affect other Google AI services. Work and school accounts follow separate rules. Developer services also have their own policies. Users can upgrade, manage, or cancel plans through Gemini Apps and Google One. Starting October 9, free personal users will rely on Flash-Lite instead of Flash or Pro. Google also advises keeping the Gemini mobile app updated as the new access rules take effect.
